I’m Destiny McLaren, and while I proudly serve as the Accountability Manager at Dick Says Yes, I’m also a DSY graduate with a story that I carry close to heart. Years ago, life threw me some tough curveballs. I was navigating a divorce, trying to steady my footing, and my credit was in bad shape. What I did have was determination—and a very real need for a reliable car.
I remember walking into Dick Says Yes not knowing what to expect. I didn’t leave with my dream car, but I left with something far more important: possibility. That 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer may not have been the SUV I wanted but couldn’t really afford back then, but it turned my life around. It got me to work, to school, to my kid’s activities, and to every appointment that moved me forward. It became my launchpad throughout some very tough times. I look back on that time now and think how much worse it would have been, had I been dealing with
Five years later, after remarrying, we had to file for bankruptcy due to lingering medical bills. It was humbling—but that Lancer meant I didn’t have to start from zero. I had already shown what I could do, and that car was part of the foundation I was building on. The next time I bought a car, I didn’t have to compromise—I got to choose. A 2014 Chevy Traverse, with enough space for my growing family. Sure, the payments were a stretch, but this time I had real options. That sense of choice was everything.
Today, as Accountability Manager, I get to ensure we’re not only meeting compliance standards—but showing heart, compassion, and respect for every person who walks through our doors. Our motto, “Believe in Nice,” isn’t just a slogan. It’s our promise.
I have said for years that I’m a DSY Graduate. My old GM once called me the valedictorian. It was a joke—but it stuck with me. I took every payment, every challenge, and every decision and turned them into something more. Now I get to help others do the same.
